The septic tank is located under ground that is made of polyethylene and concrete and is watertight. The waste that stayed in the tank for a long time will settle into the bottom and is called sludge. The oil in the waste will float to the top called scum the liquid is filtered out of the tank through the drain field leaving the sludge and scum behind. The sludge and the scum that are left behind will be pumped out of the tank. The septic tank needs regular pumping to remove the solids and the oils to avoid clogging of the filtering system of the tank. A damage septic tank system is a major health hazard to the neighborhood that is why it is important to periodically pump out the solid and the oil out of the tank. The health department has recommended a manual cleaning of the tank manual cleaning would allow the sides and bottom to be scrubbed and washed. A contractor can be hired to do the dirty work but this can also be done by the individual. This is also the best time to check for cracks and leaks of the tank.
